Robotic Surgery

Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery

Our surgeons at Foundation Surgical Hospital of San Antonio can perform minimally invasive procedures using robot-assisted surgery. While surgeons may need to make large incisions on a patient’s body in traditional surgery, a robot-assisted procedure does not require large incisions. It may provide a patient with the following benefits:

  • Less tissue trauma
  • Less pain
  • Fewer chances of scarring
  • Faster recovery
  • Shorter hospital stay

Your surgeon may recommend robotic surgery if nonsurgical treatments are not enough to improve your condition. However, not all patients may be a good candidate for minimally invasive surgery. A thorough medical evaluation must be done first before your healthcare team recommends whether a minimally invasive surgery may be appropriate for you, or other treatment options must be tried first before surgery may be considered.

da Vinci Surgical System

Doctors may recommend surgery when medications and lifestyle modifications fail to treat symptoms. Some surgeries relieve or prevent pain, while others can help reduce symptoms or improve certain bodily functions. Doctors may recommend surgery to collect tissue samples for examination, such as a biopsy. If surgery is part of your health journey to diagnose or manage symptoms, we have the advanced technology to support your doctor’s recommended procedure.

Our goal is to combine exceptional care with advanced technology to improve patients' outcomes. We use the da Vinci Surgical System, which allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery with enhanced precision and a better surgical patient experience.

These robotic systems have robotic arms where surgical instruments and a high-resolution camera are attached. The da Vinci system cannot perform surgery independently, so rest assured that a surgeon operates the system throughout your surgery. The surgeon fully controls the robotic arm from a computer console and guides them within the surgical area.

The thought of undergoing surgery can be frightening for some patients. Our surgeons are experienced in what they do. Your doctor will work closely with you to evaluate your symptoms, overall health and other factors to determine whether you are a good candidate for robotic surgery. Count on us for compassionate care and support every step of the way.
